A Transformative Project for Northern Ghana
AppCyclers, a Ghanaian social enterprise dedicated to innovative waste management solutions, has officially launched the "Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative," a transformative project aimed at tackling environmental challenges through improved plastic waste collection and recycling in Northern Ghana.
Complete Circular Economy Model
The project is deeply committed to fostering a complete circular economy model by ensuring that collected plastics are not only diverted from landfills but also actively recycled and reintegrated into the economy. Once collected, plastic waste is processed into valuable raw materials like flakes and pellets, which are then sold to downstream manufacturers who use them to produce new items thereby reducing environmental pollution and creating new value from waste.
Partnership with TRANSFORM
The initiative is made possible with funding and in-kind business support from TRANSFORM, a joint initiative led by Unilever, the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, and EY.
Project Objectives
The Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative has three primary goals:
- Divert over 1,800 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills, drastically reducing environmental pollution in the region
- Empower 100 female informal waste workers by providing them with the resources, training, and support needed to improve their livelihoods and working conditions
- Integrate a digital platform to enhance the traceability of collected plastic, enabling the project to scale and reach more communities effectively
Digital Platform Features
The platform will enable:
- Real-time tracking of collection activities
- Efficient marketplace management for recyclables
- Formal recognition of informal waste workers through accurate data collection
Strategic Alignment
TRANSFORM's support will be instrumental in bringing this initiative to life. Its commitment to fostering innovative, community-led solutions to global challenges aligns perfectly with AppCyclers' mission to drive environmental sustainability and social impact.
Leadership Perspective
"The Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative marks a significant step toward fostering a circular economy model βone that tackles plastic pollution in the region, fosters economic empowerment for informal waste workers and collectors, and demonstrates a scalable model for sustainable waste management through tech innovation."
